When it's time to look for places where warm air can leak out of your home, there's a few usual suspects. Windows, doors and any cracks in the walls are all pretty obvious – it's the less noticeable spots that could cause you trouble, as well as a higher heating bill.
To avoid this, make sure you put real effort into your air leak search and look for the harder-to-find spots. Here are four places to start:
- Any cable entrance point or outlet: Outlets are a relatively easy leak source to detect, since you can feel for cold air in front of them. However, any place where cables or wires come into your home can be an issue. Check to make sure there's no gap at any of these sites in your house, and don't forget to check the basement or other areas that are out of sight. To avoid this, make sure you put real effort into your air leak search and look for the harder-to-find spots. Here are four places to start:
- Drain assembly holes: House Logic called this "the biggest air leak in your house you don't know about," and it may indeed be a shock to anyone unfamiliar with plumbing. According to this source, some homes have a space cut out for the drain under their bathtubs. It's supposed to make it easier to access the pipes but it could also be a secret heat suck.
- Foundation gaps: You probably don't think about your house's foundation that much, but it poses a possible heat loss risk, too. You should specifically look at the places where the house itself sits on the foundation for any possible spaces.
- Spigots or faucets outside: It's not just the interior you need to think about. The Department of Energy listed this as one of the features in your home you need to check. Just like an outlet, this faucet could cover a hole in the side of the home.
As you patch up all of these spots, you might want to consider a ceramic heater, which could make sitting out the winter weather more bearable.
